LED stage lights are usually controlled using a protocol called DMX 512, which is widley accepted in the entertainment industry. A majority of lighting controllers can output DMX that will be able to control LED fixtures. The fixtures or the power supplies have a “fixture personality” or DMX address, so can be controlled individually. Each DMX channel is used to control the seperate colors in the fixture, which include: Red, Green and Blue, some fixtures may also have Amber and/or White. Each Color requires one channel so a typical fixture only needs 3 channels to operate it. A DMX Universe is 512 channels so will control up to 170 individual fixtures.
