How to Dispose of Fluorescent Lamps in Florida

Fluorescent light bulbs (including CFL's) contain mercury, which
is hazardous to the environment and must be disposed of properly. The
Environmental Protection Agency has designated these lamps as universal
waste, which is designed to control the management of mercury-containing
wastes. Each state can impose additional rules regarding the disposal
of these types of items. Florida prohibits throwing these items into the
general trash and requires they be recycled through an approved
household hazardous waste program.
-
Determine what county the items are in. Florida household hazardous waste programs are maintained at the county level. Businesses are also required to recycle all mercury items and can use a local company that has been approved for this purpose.
-
Contact the approved waste disposal company or program to determine their hours of operation.
-
Transport the light bulbs to the location for disposal. Many
locations in Florida will also take other mercury items such as
batteries
So, seriously, wouldn't it be easier (and safer) to just use LEDs?
