The growing LED market
Since
1997, LED lighting has represented the future of lighting. From the
earliest days, LED effectively took over the entertainment and
architectural lighting markets. Its benefits that were most appealing
to these markets included the long life of and the lack of heat
produced by LED light sources therefore reducing the required
maintenance as well. Then, in a gradual but surging moment beginning in
2005 / 2006, R&D teams with leading manufacturers had an epiphany.
They collectively and simultaneously figured out that white lighting
and the ability to replace low efficiency standard lighting with highly
efficient and extremely long life LED’s would be massive, and massive
it is becoming.
Markettracker Strategies Unlimited says
global sales of General Purpose LED’s will triple to $14.9 billion in
2013 from $4.9 billion this year.
Additionally, according to the Department of Energy, in the next 20 years rapid adoption of LED lighting in the U.S. can:
- Reduce electricity demands from lighting by one-third.
- Eliminate 258 million metric tons of carbon emissions.
- Obsolete 40 new, unbuilt power plants.
- Create financial savings that could exceed $200 billion.
